What is hybrid flooring?

Hybrid flooring is rapidly becoming one of the most popular flooring choices across Australia—and for good reason. Hybrid flooring is a great option thanks to its many benefits. In our case, hybrid flooring is made from SPC (stone polymer composite), an extremely durable material that lasts for years with little to no maintenance. if you need help check out our guide on buying hybird.

As the cost of living rises, budget-friendly flooring is more in demand—and that’s where hybrid flooring shines. It’s DIY-friendly, saving you from expensive installation costs, and it’s cheaper to manufacture than other materials. This means the final product can range anywhere from $30–$50 per m², making it a great choice for people on a budget!

Hybrid flooring colours & variation

When it comes to hybrid flooring, achieving a “real” look is always everyone’s main goal. It’s important when choosing hybrid flooring to go with a good brand—this ensures you’re getting the best quality decorative layer.

Typically, hybrid flooring comes in all the popular wood tones, ranging from Natural Blackbutt to QLD Spotted Gum and many more. All our hybrid flooring is incredibly realistic—it shocks everyone who sees it!

One thing to keep in mind when laying hybrid flooring is the variation in plank patterns. Be careful not to lay two identical planks next to each other to maintain the most natural effect.

Not sure on Hybrid Flooring?

aIf all the great benefits of hybrid flooring aren’t enough to sway you in its direction, don’t worry—we have plenty of other options for those looking for something a little different. To pursuade you dive into the top colour trends for hybrid flooring.

If you’re into real timber, we have stunning ranges of engineered timber. While it’s slightly more expensive than hybrid flooring, the true wood finish is something many people just can’t resist – [visit our engineered timber collection here].

If you’re on a tight budget and just want to get the job done quickly, vinyl might be your best option. We stock a wide range of vinyl brands and thicknesses – [check out all our vinyl here].

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, all of our hybrid flooring comes with pre-attached underlay. Be careful though—some brands don’t include it, meaning you’ll need to spend more on extra underlay!

It’s important to note that you still need a level subfloor. Depending on the brand, your floor may need to be level anywhere between 1mm to 5mm per m². The brands we sell at Hybrid Floors Australia allow for up to 2mm per m².

Most hybrid flooring comes with pre-attached underlay—so what’s the difference? Depending on the brand, the underlay can vary in performance, making the boards feel softer or firmer underfoot.

The main purpose of the underlay is acoustics. Good acoustic performance ensures you won’t be hearing footsteps in apartment buildings or multi-storey homes.

Yes and no.

A lot of brands online claim to be 100% waterproof—but with today’s technology, that’s not entirely true. Let me break it down:

The SPC core that our hybrid flooring is made from is 100% waterproof—water cannot penetrate the material itself. However, the underlay (which is typically made from foam or plastic) is water-resistant, not waterproof.

The main issue arises when water comes from underneath—for example, from flooding or underfloor leaks. In these cases, moisture can affect the joining system and underlay, potentially causing problems.

So while hybrid flooring is highly water-resistant and suitable for kitchens, laundries, and everyday spills, it’s not immune to damage from floods or rising moisture.

In most cases, yes—hybrid flooring is better than vinyl.

Hybrid flooring has come a long way in Australia over the past few years. It's better than vinyl in many ways: it's easier to install thanks to click-lock systems, it doesn't require a perfectly level surface to get a good finish, it's more durable, and it offers better acoustic performance.

The only reason we’d recommend vinyl over hybrid is because of budget or the size and location of the room. Since vinyl is thinner and has fewer features, it's almost always cheaper.

That said, vinyl is still 100% waterproof and easy to lay—especially in smaller areas like laundries or bathrooms.

So depending on your use case, hybrid flooring is usually the better choice—unless you're on a tight budget or working with a small space.

Hybrid flooring is super easy to clean—just follow these simple rules. Always stay on top of it: regularly vacuum and mop, and wipe up spills immediately or as soon as possible.

When using a floor cleaner on hybrid flooring, avoid any products that contain oil, ammonia, bleach, wax, vinegar, or polish, as these can damage the surface. Instead, choose a pH-neutral floor cleaner and use a damp (not soaking wet) mop. for more info check out our hybrid flooring cleaning blog.

To keep your floors in top shape for years to come, avoid dragging furniture and keep pet nails trimmed.

Yes, hybrid flooring is eco-friendly.

Our hybrid flooring is made from SPC, a material composed of natural stone powder and recycled plastics. Many SPC brands prioritise the use of recycled materials to reduce waste and keep the manufacturing process sustainable.

Not only is the material itself eco-friendly, but hybrid flooring also has long-term environmental benefits. It’s highly durable and long-lasting, meaning it won’t need replacing for many years—unlike carpet or other flooring types that wear out quickly.

Hybrid flooring is also energy-efficient. It can help improve insulation in your home, which reduces the need for heating and cooling—saving energy and money over time.
