| How it's laid | Glued down only | Glue is the only way to lay chevron in engineered oak. The floor below must be flat, dry and sealed. |

m², at today's prices for the lowest-priced colour, beside the same oak in herringbone:

Chevron needs more spare boards than herringbone, because its angled ends are cut again at every wall. The flooring calculator works out the boxes for any floor.
How the boards meet, and why chevron needs more spare boards than herringbone.

Herringbone boards have square ends that meet the side of the next board. Chevron boards have angled ends that meet in a point.

Chevron comes as left and right boards with angled ends. Their points meet on a straight centre line, which the installer marks first.

The angled ends are cut again at every wall, on both sides of the room, so chevron needs more spare boards than herringbone.
Four common situations, and what to check in each.
Chevron looks its best where you can see the V run: a long hallway, an entry, or living and dining rooms in one. Run the points along the longest wall or towards the main view, and the room reads longer.
Many strata buildings ask for a tested sound rating first. Our 15mm oak scored L'nT,w 45 (AAAC 5 stars) in its impact sound test over a concrete slab. A floor laid wall to wall usually tests a little worse, so ask your strata what they need. The report is on each product page.
It depends on the heating. Glued-down engineered oak can go over water-based (hydronic) heating, with the floor kept under 26°C. The maker's guideline doesn't allow electric heating under its timber. Check the individual product description for your floor.
Chevron is real timber with a lacquered top, so wipe up spills straight away and put a mat in front of the sink. Leave it out of bathrooms and rooms with a floor drain: the warranty doesn't cover them. For wet areas, hybrid herringbone is 100% water resistant.
Straight answers to what people search for most.
It's a parquetry pattern. Each board has both ends cut at an angle, and the boards meet in a point to make a continuous V down the room. In France it's called point de Hongrie, while herringbone is bâton rompu.
Ours is engineered oak: 15mm (3mm oak on top), in 680 x 125mm boards. More in our guide to chevron engineered timber flooring.
Neither is better. It comes down to the look you want:
Chevron costs a little more and needs more spare boards. See both drawn above, or read herringbone vs chevron.
Ours is, a little. Our oak chevron costs from $113.99/m², against $103.99/m² for the same 15mm oak in herringbone. Chevron also needs more spare boards: order 15 to 20% extra for cuts, against about 15% for herringbone.
For a 20 m² room, the floor comes to $2,790.54 in chevron (18 boxes) and $2,495.80 in herringbone (20 boxes).
No. Chevron is a classic parquetry pattern that has stayed in fashion because it's simple: one clean line of V shapes. It suits period homes and new builds alike.
The colour dates a floor faster than the pattern. Light and mid-tone oaks stay easy to live with, and deep greys suit a modern home.
Our chevron is engineered oak, and it's glued down: the maker's guideline says glue is the only way to lay its chevron. For a pattern that clicks together and floats, choose hybrid herringbone, from $54.98/m². It's 100% water resistant, with the underlay attached.
Order 15 to 20% more than the room's area. The angled ends mean more cuts at every wall than with planks or herringbone. We work on 20%.
For a 20 m² room, that's 24 m², or 18 boxes of 1.36 m². The flooring calculator works out the boxes for your room.
Ours are 680 x 125mm, 15mm (3mm oak on top). A box covers 1.36 m². Left and right boards meet in the point of each V.
It depends on the heating. Glued-down engineered oak can go over water-based (hydronic) heating, with the floor never above 26°C. The maker's guideline doesn't allow electric heating under its timber. Check the individual product description for your floor.
Yes, if it meets your building's sound rule. Our 15mm oak scored L'nT,w 45 (AAAC 5 stars) in an impact sound test over a concrete slab. The lower the number, the quieter the floor below. A floor laid wall to wall usually tests a little worse, so ask your strata what they need. The report is on each product page.
Sweep, or vacuum with a soft brush head, then use a damp (not wet) mop and a pH-neutral floor cleaner. Wipe up spills straight away.
Never use a steam mop, steel wool or wax. Felt pads under furniture and a mat at each door keep the lacquer looking new. More in how to clean engineered timber floors.

Chevron in engineered oak is always glued down. This is what the maker's guideline asks for.
The floor below must be flat to within 3mm over 3m², clean and dry. Seal it with a roll-on moisture barrier first. Take up any carpet, staples, old glue or old floating floor. New concrete needs at least 60 days to cure.
The points of the V line up along one straight line, so the installer marks it first and works out from it. Spread only as much glue as can be covered before it dries, and leave a 10 to 15mm gap at the walls (12 to 15mm in humid areas).
Wipe any glue off the boards straight away. Keep foot traffic light until the glue has set, and wait 24 hours before moving furniture in. Skirting or scotia covers the gap at the walls.
