Flooring Calculator
Getting your flooring quantity right the first time saves you money, delays, and that sinking feeling when you're two planks short on a Sunday afternoon. I've seen it happen more times than I can count — someone measures their lounge, orders the exact amount, and ends up scrambling because they forgot about wastage, doorways, or that weird alcove behind the TV unit.
This calculator takes the guesswork out. Punch in your room dimensions, select your flooring type, and we'll tell you exactly how many square metres to order — including the extra you'll actually need.

How the Calculator Works
The maths behind flooring quantities is straightforward, but the devil's in the details. Here's what happens when you enter your measurements:
Step 1: We calculate the total area of your space (length × width for each room).
Step 2: We add wastage based on your flooring type and room complexity. This isn't guesswork — it's based on what installers actually use on the job.
Step 3: We convert the total into the number of packs or boxes you'll need, based on the coverage per pack of your chosen product.
That third step matters more than people realise. Our SPC hybrid flooring typically comes in packs covering around 2.2m² each, but this varies between ranges. Get this wrong and you'll either be short or left with boxes you can't return.

That's exactly why hybrid flooring has become so popular across Sydney homes. It handles moisture without warping, stands up to scratches from pets and kids, and looks like real timber without the maintenance headaches. We've supplied flooring to renovators in Bondi, new builds out in the Hills District, and apartment upgrades everywhere from Surry Hills to Chatswood.
Our hybrid range uses SPC (stone plastic composite) cores — the same construction recommended by flooring industry bodies for Australian conditions. This rigid core means the planks won't expand or contract with Sydney's humidity swings, and they're 100% waterproof right through to the core.
Whether you're tackling a weekend DIY project or working with a professional installer, we make it simple. Pick your style, order free samples to check colours in your actual space, and we'll deliver directly to your door.
What You'll Need Before You Start
Before you reach for your tape measure, grab these:
A tape measure — sounds obvious, but I've had customers try to calculate room sizes using their phone's step counter. Don't be that person.
A notepad or your phone — jot down each measurement as you go. Trust me, you'll forget them by the time you walk back to the kitchen.
A rough floor plan — even a quick sketch helps you break complex layouts into manageable rectangles.
How to Measure Your Rooms (The Right Way)
After years of quoting flooring jobs, I can tell you the number one mistake people make: measuring the middle of the room and ignoring the tricky bits. Walls aren't always straight, and rooms are rarely perfect rectangles.
For rectangular rooms
Measure the longest point of the length and the widest point of the width. If one wall bows out slightly near a window, include that extra bit. It's better to have a few extra planks than to be short when you reach that section.
Round up to the nearest 0.1 metre. If your room is 4.87m × 3.42m, call it 4.9m × 3.5m. Small rounding adds up to peace of mind.
For L-shaped or irregular rooms
Break the space into smaller rectangles. An open-plan kitchen-dining might become one rectangle for the kitchen and another for the dining area. Measure each section separately, then add them together.
Don't forget these areas
This is where most DIYers come unstuck:
Hallways — measure the full length, including any jogs or widening near doorways.
Walk-in robes and built-in wardrobes — many people skip these, then realise they want continuous flooring throughout.
Doorways — flooring needs to run slightly under door frames (usually about 10-15mm), so your measurements should extend into the threshold.
Alcoves and bay windows — that 600mm bump-out for your bay window still needs flooring.
A real example
Let's say you're doing a typical Queensland three-bedroom home. The main living area measures 6.2m × 4.8m, the hallway is 8m × 1.2m, and the three bedrooms are 3.6m × 3.2m, 3.4m × 3.0m, and 2.8m × 2.8m.

Wastage Factors Explained by Room Type
Not all rooms are created equal. Here's what I recommend based on what I've actually seen on job sites:
Open-plan living areas
These are usually the easiest to lay because you've got long, uninterrupted runs. Stick with 5-8% wastage unless you've got multiple angles or a kitchen island breaking up the space.
Hallways and corridors
Surprisingly wasteful. All those doorways mean constant cutting, and the narrow width limits how you can use off-cuts. Allow 8-10%.
Kitchens
Lots of obstacles — island benches, dishwashers, kickboards. You'll be doing fiddly cuts around corners. Allow 10%.
Bathrooms and laundries
Only attempt this with genuinely waterproof flooring like SPC hybrid or vinyl. The cutting around toilets, vanities, and floor wastes adds up. Allow 12-15%.
Bedrooms
Usually straightforward rectangles with maybe a built-in robe to work around. 5-8% is typically enough.
Your Questions About Hybrid Flooring Sydney
Here are answers to some of the most common questions about our Hybrid Flooring products. If you still can’t find what you’re looking for, just reach out to our team here.
Do you deliver to all Sydney suburbs?
Yes — we deliver right across Greater Sydney, from the Central Coast down to Wollongong, and everywhere in between including Western Sydney, the Hills District, Northern Beaches, and Inner West. No suburb exclusions.
How long does delivery take to Sydney?
Most Sydney orders arrive within 3-7 business days. We ship from our Brisbane warehouse within 1-2 business days, and freight typically takes 2-5 days to reach Sydney metro addresses. Regional areas may take slightly longer.
Can I pick up instead of getting delivery?
We're based in Brisbane, so pickup isn't practical for Sydney customers. However, delivery costs are very reasonable, and we offer free shipping on orders over a certain value. Contact us for a delivery quote on your order.
Does your SPC conatin scillica dust?
No - our SPC flooring is 0% silica. That’s not a “nice to have” for us; it’s a safety standard we won’t compromise on.
What’s silica dust (and why should you care)?
When materials that contain crystalline silica are cut, ground, drilled, or sanded, they can release respirable crystalline silica (RCS) — a very fine dust that can lodge deep in the lungs. Long-term or repeated exposure is linked to serious, permanent diseases like silicosis and lung cancer. Cancer Council
Why this matters with SPC flooring:
Some flooring products on the market may include silica-containing ingredients, and it often isn’t clearly talked about. If you’re buying SPC flooring, you want clarity on what’s in the core — not vague marketing.
Bottom line:
Keeping you (and anyone installing the floor) safer is a priority — that’s why we only stock silica-free SPC flooring.
Practical note: even with silica-free SPC, always control dust when cutting any flooring (cut outside, use dust extraction or wet cutting, and wear a proper P2 respirator). Safe Work Australia
Do you offer installation in Sydney?
We have a network of over 200 installers so we can recommend trusted installers in Sydney if you need one. Many of our customers also install themselves — hybrid flooring uses a click-lock system that's genuinely DIY-friendly. See our installation guide for step-by-step instructions.
Can I order samples before committing?
Absolutely — we strongly recommend it. Order free samples here. We'll send them to your Sydney address so you can check colours and textures in your actual lighting before placing your full order.
What if I order too much or too little?
We recommend ordering a minimum 10% extra to account for cuts and waste. If you have unopened boxes left over. If you need more, just place another order - we'll try to match the same batch where possible.
Does SPC flooring need underlay?
In most cases, hybrid flooring comes with a pre-attached underlay — and you should make sure the range you’re buying includes it before you purchase.
A pre-attached underlay is a big win because it:
- Makes installation easier and faster (less to buy, less to stuff up)
- Improves comfort and helps reduce noise
- Keeps overall costs down (you’re not paying extra for separate underlay)
It’s also especially useful in apartments and multi-storey homes, where noise transfer matters. A good underlay helps soften footsteps and reduce that “hollow” sound you can get with hard floors.
When comparing options, don’t just take “acoustic” as a buzzword — ask for the acoustic test report (or check the specs). Quality hybrid flooring should have proper testing to back up any claims.
One of the best parts of hybrid flooring is how DIY-friendly it is. In most installs, you just lay it as a floating floor over a suitable subfloor (or existing floor), click it together, and you’re done.
Compare that with other flooring types like engineered timber or laminate, where you’ll often need to buy separate underlay. Depending on what you choose, that can add roughly $2–$8 per m² on top of the flooring cost — which adds up fast across a whole home.
