Look at what's on each side of the join. Our trims are colour-matched to our SPC hybrid floors and fit their thickness, 6.5mm or 9.5mm:
| Where your floor | Trim | Our sizes (L × W × H) | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meets the skirting, and the skirting stays | Scotia | 2400 × 28 × 15mm | $12.60 a length ($5.25/m) |
| Goes through a doorway, same floor both sides | T-moulding | 6.5mm floors: 2400 × 45 × 7mm; 9.5mm floors: 2400 × 30 × 10mm | $12.60 a length ($5.25/m) |
| Runs more than 12m (a break in the floor) | T-moulding | 6.5mm floors: 2400 × 45 × 7mm; 9.5mm floors: 2400 × 30 × 10mm | $12.60 a length ($5.25/m) |
| Meets lower tiles, vinyl, concrete or carpet | Reducer (6.5mm floors) | 2400 × 43 × 10mm | $19.80 a length ($8.25/m) |
| Stops at a sliding door track, hearth or step edge | L-moulding | 6.5mm floors: 2400 × 25 × 7mm; 9.5mm floors: 2400 × 30 × 10mm | $12.60 a length ($5.25/m) |
| Runs down the stairs | Stair nosing, one per step | 6.5mm floors: 1540 × 115 × 38mm; 9.5mm floors: 1820 × 115 × 38mm | $49.50 a step |
| Stops where a timber-look trim would sit too high (9.5mm floors) | Aluminium end trim, wood grain | 3400 × 18 × 8.4mm | $39.60 a length ($11.65/m) |
| Meets a wall where the skirting is being replaced | No trim: fit the new skirting after the floor, over the gap |
Lengths are 2.4m, apart from stair nosing (one length per step) and the aluminium end trim (3.4m). On 9.5mm floors, finish an edge at lower tiles or carpet with the matching L-moulding. Pick your floor in the trim finder at the top of this page to see its own trims.
A floating floor has to move under its trims, so trims are fixed to the wall, the step or the floor underneath, never to the new boards. Keep the gap clear under every trim, and never seal the edges with silicone or caulk: it stops the floor moving.
| Trim | Fixed to | How |
|---|---|---|
| Scotia | The skirting | Glue it with flexible construction adhesive, or pin it to the skirting. Cut corners at 45°. |
| T-moulding, 6.5mm | The subfloor, through a PVC base channel | Screw or glue the channel to the subfloor between the two floors, lay both floors, then clip the T-moulding in. |
| T-moulding, 9.5mm | Flexible construction adhesive | Bed it on adhesive with the gap under it kept clear, cut to the doorway's width. |
| Reducer | The subfloor, through a PVC base channel | Fix the channel about 7mm from the edge of the floor, then clip the reducer in over the edge. |
| L-moulding | Flexible construction adhesive | Bed it on adhesive along the edge. Mitre outside corners at 45°. |
| Stair nosing | The step | Glue and screw it to the step, then fill over the screw heads. Cut each length to its step. |
Measure first, then work it out for each trim. At today's prices:
| Trim | How many | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Scotia | Metres of wall, divided by 2.4, rounded up, plus one spare for the corners | A 4 x 4m room (16m of wall): 8 lengths, $100.80 |
| L-moulding | Metres of edge, divided by 2.4, rounded up, plus one spare | 5m of sliding doors: 4 lengths, $50.40 |
| T-moulding | One 2.4m length does two standard doorways (820 to 870mm), sometimes three | 3 doorways: 2 lengths, $25.20 |
| Reducer | The same as T-moulding. On 6.5mm floors, add one base channel per length | 2 doorways to tiles: 1 length, $19.80 |
| Stair nosing | One per step, cut to the step's width | 13 steps: 13 nosings, $643.50 |
Each trim's own page works out the lengths from your metres or steps.

Floor trims are also called transition strips, mouldings, profiles or edging. Each shape has its own name:
Look at what's on each side of the join. The same floor at the same height takes a T-moulding. A lower floor, like tiles, vinyl, concrete or carpet, takes a reducer. Where the floor just stops, at a sliding door track, a hearth or a step, use an L-moulding. Stairs take stair nosing on every step.
Where the floor runs more than 12m, yes: our hybrid floors need a break there, and laminate and timber need one after 8m. Put the break in a doorway and cover it with a T-moulding. For our hybrid, a break at each doorway between rooms is best, so each room can move on its own.
Wherever the floor changes, or steps down to tiles or carpet, you need a trim too.
Our hybrid floors need an 8 to 18mm gap at every wall, door frame and fixed object: 8 to 10mm where humidity is low or average, and 10 to 18mm where it's humid. Undercut door frames so the boards slide under them with the gap still there.
The trim covers the gap. It must never close it or pin the floor down.
Never to the floating floor: it has to move under the trim. On our 6.5mm floors, screw or glue the PVC base channel to the subfloor, lay the floors up to it, then clip the T-moulding or reducer in on top. The 9.5mm T-moulding and the L-moulding are bedded on flexible construction adhesive.
Scotia goes on the skirting, and stair nosing is glued and screwed to the step. Don't use silicone or caulk along the edges: it stops the floor moving.
Scotia and L-moulding come in 2.4m lengths. Measure the metres to cover, divide by 2.4, round up and add one spare for the corners: 18m of wall needs 9 lengths.
One T-moulding or reducer length does two standard doorways, sometimes three. Stair nosing is one length per step. Each trim's page works out the lengths for you.
A reducer, when the tiles sit lower than the hybrid. It slopes down to the tiles, so there's no edge to trip on. Ours suit our 6.5mm hybrid colours: 2400 × 43 × 10mm, $19.80 a length, with a PVC base channel underneath. Tiles at the same height take a T-moulding. On 9.5mm hybrid, finish the edge with the matching L-moulding.
A reducer. It covers the edge of the hybrid and slopes down toward the carpet. Fix its base channel to the subfloor first, then clip the reducer in. On 9.5mm hybrid, the matching L-moulding finishes the edge.
It needs one of them, because the gap at the walls has to be covered. Keeping your skirting? Fit scotia along its base. Replacing your skirting? Lay the floor first, then fit the new skirting over the gap. Then you don't need scotia.
