Square metre calculator
Work out the square metres (m²) of a room, a whole house, a wall or any space. Measure in metres, centimetres, millimetres or feet, even an L-shaped room or a circle. Then see how many boxes of our flooring or tiles you need, and what they cost.
How do I calculate square metres?
Measure the length and width in metres, then multiply them: length × width = m². For an L-shaped room, split it into rectangles, work out each one and add them up. Measured in centimetres? Divide each side by 100 first.
Example: a living room 5 m long and 4 m wide is 5 × 4 = 20 m². For flooring, add 10% for cuts: 22 m². Our 6.5mm hybrid planks come in boxes of 2.24 m², so that's 22 ÷ 2.24 = 9.8, or 10 boxes ($761.40).

How to calculate square metres of any shape

A rectangle: length × width
Measure the length and the width at the widest points, in metres. Multiply them.
4.2 × 3.6 m = 15.12 m²

An L-shape: split it into rectangles
Split the room into two rectangles, work out each one and add them up. Or work out the whole rectangle and take away the missing corner. Both give the same answer.
A: 7 × 3 m = 21 m². B: 4 × 2 m = 8 m². Together: 29 m². Or 7 × 5 m = 35 m², less the 3 × 2 m corner = 29 m².

A triangle: base × height ÷ 2
Measure the base. Then measure the height straight out from the base to the far point, at a right angle. Multiply them and halve it.
4 × 3 m ÷ 2 = 6 m²

A circle: 3.14 × radius × radius
Measure across the middle. Half of that is the radius. Multiply the radius by itself, then by 3.14.
3 m across, so the radius is 1.5 m: 3.14 × 1.5 × 1.5 = 7.07 m²
Measuring a room for flooring? Measure wall to wall at the widest points, and include wardrobes and pantries if the floor runs into them. Split rooms with odd corners or a bay window into rectangles and triangles, and add them up. Take away anything that won't be covered, like a kitchen island.
A wall works the same way: its width × its height, less any windows and doors. For tiles, the tile calculator also works out the grout and adhesive.
How much extra to order for cuts
Floors and tiles are cut to fit at the walls, so you need a little more than the room's area. How much more depends on the layout:
| Floor or layout | Extra | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Straight planks: hybrid, vinyl, laminate, timber and bamboo | 10% | Planks are cut at each wall and at the end of each row. |
| Herringbone | 15% | Every board that meets a wall is cut on an angle. |
| Chevron | 20% | The angled ends are cut again at every wall. |
| Tiles laid straight or in a brick pattern | 10% | The tiles at the edges are cut. |
| Tiles on the diagonal | 15% | Every edge tile is cut on an angle. |
| Tiles in herringbone | 20% | Lots of cuts at every edge. |
Small rooms, and rooms with lots of corners and doorways, waste more. Keep any spare boxes for repairs later, and buy every box in one order so the colour batch matches.
How many boxes of flooring do I need?
Floors and tiles are sold by the box, and each box covers a set number of m². Take your m² with the extra for cuts, divide it by the m² in one box, and round up to a whole box.
(m² + extra for cuts) ÷ m² in one box = boxes, rounded up
A 20 m² room in our 6.5mm hybrid planks: 20 m² + 10% = 22 m². 22 ÷ 2.24 m² a box = 9.8, so buy 10 boxes.

Square metres to square feet and squares
Measured in centimetres? Divide each side by 100 to get metres: 420 cm is 4.2 m. In millimetres, divide by 1,000: 4200 mm is 4.2 m. In feet, multiply by 0.3048. Or switch the calculator to cm, mm or feet and it converts for you.
| Square metres | Square feet | Squares |
|---|---|---|
| 1 m² | 10.76 sq ft | 0.11 |
| 10 m² | 107.64 sq ft | 1.08 |
| 20 m² | 215.28 sq ft | 2.15 |

| 200 m² | 2,152.78 sq ft | 21.53 |
| 250 m² | 2,690.98 sq ft | 26.91 |
A square, still used on Australian house plans and in real estate ads, is 100 square feet, or 9.29 m². A hectare is 10,000 m², and an acre is about 4,047 m².
Your questions, answered
Square metre questions
What people ask Google most about working out square metres.
How do I calculate square metres?
Multiply the length by the width, both in metres: length × width = m². A room 5 m long and 4 m wide is 5 × 4 = 20 m². For other shapes, split them into rectangles and add them up, or use the calculator above.
How do I calculate the m² of a room?
Measure the floor's length and width at the widest points, wall to wall, and multiply them. Include wardrobes and pantries if the floor runs into them. For an L-shaped or open-plan room, measure each part, work out each one and add them up.
What is 4 m by 3 m in square metres?
12 m². Multiply the two sides: 4 × 3 = 12. With 10% extra for flooring cuts, order 13.2 m².
How many square metres is 4 m by 5 m?
20 m², because 4 × 5 = 20. With 10% extra for cuts, that's 22 m² of flooring.
Is 10 square metres the same as 10 m by 10 m?
No. 10 m by 10 m is 100 m². 10 m² is a space like 5 m by 2 m, or about 3.16 m by 3.16 m.
How many square metres is a 12 by 12 room?
If it's 12 by 12 feet, it's 144 square feet, or 13.38 m². If it's 12 by 12 metres, it's 144 m². Switch the calculator to feet for a room measured in feet.
How do I work out the square metres of an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles. Work out each one, length × width, and add them up. Or work out the whole rectangle and take away the missing corner. A room 7 × 5 m with a 3 × 2 m corner missing is 35 − 6 = 29 m².
How do I work out the square metres of an irregular shape?
Split it into simple shapes: rectangles, triangles and circles. Work out each one and add them up. A triangle is base × height ÷ 2, and a circle is 3.14 × radius × radius. In the calculator, pick a shape for each part and take away any gaps.
How do I work out the square metres of a wall?
Multiply the wall's width by its height, then take away the windows and doors you won't cover. A wall 3.6 m wide and 2.4 m high with a 1.2 × 1.2 m window is 8.64 − 1.44 = 7.2 m².
How do I convert square feet to square metres?
Multiply the square feet by 0.0929: 100 sq ft is 9.29 m². To go back, multiply square metres by 10.764: 20 m² is 215.28 sq ft.
How do I convert cm or mm to square metres?
Change each side to metres first, then multiply. Divide centimetres by 100 and millimetres by 1,000: 420 × 360 cm is 4.2 × 3.6 m, which is 15.12 m². Already have cm²? Divide by 10,000 to get m².
How many squares is a house?
Divide its m² by 9.29. A 200 m² home is about 21.5 squares. A square is 100 square feet, an old unit still used on house plans and in real estate ads.
How do you calculate the price per square metre?
Divide the price by the m² it covers. A box of our 6.5mm hybrid planks is $76.14 and covers 2.24 m², so it's $76.14 ÷ 2.24 = $33.99 a m². To cost a room, take your m² with the extra for cuts and round up to whole boxes.
How much extra flooring should I buy?
Add 10% for straight planks or tiles, 15% for herringbone and 20% for chevron. Small rooms and rooms with lots of corners waste more, so go higher if you're unsure. Spare boxes are handy for repairs later.
How many boxes of flooring do I need?
Add the extra for cuts to your m², divide by the m² in one box and round up. A 20 m² room in our 6.5mm hybrid planks: 22 m² ÷ 2.24 m² = 9.8, so 10 boxes. Pick a floor in the calculator to see it for yours.
How many square metres are in a box of flooring?
It depends on the floor. Ours go from 1.2 m² a box (oak herringbone) to 3.9 m² a box (2.5mm vinyl planks). A box of our laminate covers 1.917 m². The table above and each product page give the box size.
