Spotted Gum Flooring

Yes. Spotted Gum is a very hard Australian hardwood, about 11 kN on the Janka hardness test against about 5 to 6 for oak, and its wavy, busy grain hides everyday marks. It grows along the east coast, south-east Queensland included.

You can have it as real timber (our 14mm engineered Spotted Gum) or its look in hybrid, laminate and vinyl. Compare every type in the table above.

• The look is busy. For a calm, even floor, blackbutt or oak suits better.
• No two boards match. Real spotted gum varies a lot, so order samples first.
• Real timber still dents. Stiletto heels and dropped pots can mark any timber, and strong sun changes its colour over time.
• Real timber isn't for wet rooms. Use our 100% water resistant vinyl planks in bathrooms and laundries.
• The printed types can't be sanded. A worn hybrid, laminate or vinyl board is replaced, not sanded back.

Neither is better; they look different. Spotted Gum is harder (about 11 kN on the Janka test against about 9 for Blackbutt) with a bold, wavy grain in deeper browns. Blackbutt is lighter and calmer, with a straight grain. See them side by side above, or our blackbutt flooring.

No. Hybrid flooring prints the look of real Spotted Gum on a stone core, with a tough wear layer on top and underlay already attached. That's why it's 100% water resistant and costs from $33.99/m². For real timber, choose our 14mm engineered Spotted Gum: solid Spotted Gum on top of a layered core.

Kitchens, yes. Our hybrid and vinyl are 100% water resistant, so spills and a damp mop won't hurt them. Real Spotted Gum is fine in a kitchen if you wipe up spills straight away and put a mat in front of the sink.

For bathrooms and laundries, our glue-down vinyl planks are a great pick. With a floating floor, a wet room depends on the floor, so check the individual product description first. Keep laminate to dry rooms.

Spotted gum's warm browns sit well with warm white, oatmeal or mushroom walls (crisp white works too), matte white, deep green or charcoal cabinets, and brass or black tapware. Keep big surfaces calm, from rugs to joinery: the floor already has plenty of colour and movement.
