Blackbutt Timber Flooring

Yes. Blackbutt is a very hard Australian hardwood, about 9 kN on the Janka hardness test against about 5 to 6 for oak, with a light golden colour and a straight, even grain that suits almost any home. It grows in coastal forests from southern New South Wales to Queensland.

You can have it as real timber (our 14mm engineered Blackbutt) or its look in hybrid, laminate and vinyl. Compare every type in the table above.

• It's softer than spotted gum. About 9 kN on the Janka test against about 11, though still well above oak.
• It's a light floor. It hides dust well, but dark spills and mud show more than on a mid-brown floor.
• Real timber still dents. Stiletto heels and dropped pots can mark any timber, and strong sun changes its colour over time.
• Real timber isn't for wet rooms. Use our 100% water resistant vinyl planks in bathrooms and laundries.
• The printed types can't be sanded. A worn hybrid, laminate or vinyl board is replaced, not sanded back.

Neither is better; they look different. Spotted Gum is harder (about 11 kN on the Janka test against about 9 for Blackbutt) with a bold, wavy grain in deeper browns. Blackbutt is lighter and calmer, with a straight grain. See them side by side above, or our spotted gum flooring.

• Natural Blackbutt is honey blonde (hybrid herringbone, 9.5mm hybrid planks and 2.5mm vinyl planks).
• New England Blackbutt is warm honey and light brown, the look of a close relative of blackbutt from the New England tablelands of northern NSW (hybrid herringbone and 9.5mm hybrid planks).
• Coastal Blackbutt is a sun-washed blonde with sandy undertones (6.5mm hybrid planks, 4.5mm vinyl planks and 2.5mm vinyl planks).
• Pale Blackbutt is the lightest: a soft, pale blonde (4.5mm vinyl planks).

No. Hybrid flooring prints the look of real Blackbutt on a stone core, with a tough wear layer on top and underlay already attached. That's why it's 100% water resistant and costs from $33.99/m². For real timber, choose our 14mm engineered Blackbutt: solid Blackbutt on top of a layered core.

Kitchens, yes. Our hybrid and vinyl are 100% water resistant, so spills and a damp mop won't hurt them. Real Blackbutt is fine in a kitchen if you wipe up spills straight away and put a mat in front of the sink.

For bathrooms and laundries, our glue-down vinyl planks are a great pick. With a floating floor, a wet room depends on the floor, so check the individual product description first. Keep laminate to dry rooms.

Not indoors. Bare timber left outside in sun and rain weathers to grey; a floor inside your home doesn't. Our engineered Blackbutt comes with a lacquer hardened by UV light at the factory. Sun does slowly change any floor's colour, so use blinds or curtains where strong sun hits it.

Looked after, decades. Our engineered timber, hybrid and laminate carry a 25-year warranty for homes plus a lifetime structural warranty; our vinyl planks up to a lifetime for homes, depending on the plank.
