Vinyl Kitchen Flooring: Is It Good, Which One and What It Costs

By Hybrid Floors Australia · · 8 min read

Rainbow Beach vinyl planks running from a white kitchen into the living room

Yes: vinyl kitchen flooring is a good choice, and glue-down vinyl plank flooring is the kind to buy. It's 100% water resistant, rated P3 for slip and quieter underfoot than tiles. At Hybrid Floors Australia, a 12 m² kitchen takes $343.20 to $600.48 of planks. Keep stone benches off it, lay it around fixed cabinets and fix leaks fast: the warranty doesn't cover floods.

Every vinyl plank we sell is glued down, and a kitchen is where that pays off: planks that stay put under foot traffic, no hollow sound, and a floor slim enough to go over old tiles. Below: which vinyl to buy, what your kitchen will cost at today's prices, how it goes in around cabinets and appliances, and what the warranty won't cover. Every colour, grouped by timber, is on our timber look vinyl flooring page.

Is vinyl flooring good for a kitchen?

Yes, as long as it's glued down over a flat, dry floor. Here's what that means in a kitchen:

  • Spills and mopping. The planks are 100% water resistant, so a dropped glass or a wet mop won't swell them. Wipe water up rather than leaving it to sit.
  • Wet feet. All three of our vinyl ranges are rated P3 for slip resistance (AS 4586).
  • Standing to cook. Vinyl is softer and quieter underfoot than tiles, and glued down it has no hollow sound.
  • Wear. The clear top layer that takes the traffic is 0.5mm thick on all our planks, rated for homes and businesses.
  • Height. At 2.5mm or 4.5mm, plus about 1mm of adhesive, it adds just 3.5 to 5.5mm over old kitchen tiles.

Laying it yourself over a floor that isn't perfectly flat? Then hybrid flooring is the easier pick: it clicks together, floats and hides small bumps.

Which vinyl is best for a kitchen?

Glue-down vinyl planks. They're bonded to the floor over the whole area, slim, and a damaged plank can be cut out and replaced. Here's how the four kinds of vinyl compare in a kitchen:

Kind of vinyl In a kitchen Price a m²
Glue-down planks (ours) Glued over the whole floor: solid, quiet and slim. Needs a flat floor, and most people have it laid. $22 to $39.95 at Hybrid Floors Australia
Self-adhesive (peel and stick) 1.2 to 2mm tiles or planks held by their own backing glue. Quick to lay yourself. About $17 to $33 at hardware stores
Sheet vinyl Cut from a roll 1.83 to 3m wide, so a small kitchen can have no joins at all. Sold by the metre off the roll
Click vinyl and hybrid Clicks together and floats, easy to lay yourself. Plan heavy islands with our guide to kitchen islands on a floating floor. Hybrid $33.99 to $54.98 at Hybrid Floors Australia

Our three glue-down ranges suit different kitchens. Timberland 2.5mm ($22 a m²) is the budget pick and the slimmest over old tiles. Timberland 4.5mm ($35 a m²) feels more solid, and its 1524mm planks run calm through an open-plan kitchen and living room. Premium Herringbone ($39.95 a m²) is the statement floor; allow 15% extra for cuts.

A glued floor needs flooring adhesive instead of underlay and film. It isn't in this price, so ask your floor layer to quote it with the laying.

An estimate to help you budget. Trims, skirting, adhesive, floor preparation and delivery are extra. Buy every box in one order so the batch matches.

Not in those prices: flooring adhesive, levelling compound for grout lines or a rough slab, taking up the old floor, trims at the doorways, and delivery. Found the same floor cheaper? We'll beat the price by $1 a m² on the identical product.

Can vinyl flooring go under kitchen cabinets?

No. Lay it after the cabinets go in, cut neatly around them. The installation manual for our vinyl says to cut planks to cabinetry and other fixed objects without forcing them against it.

  • Never sit a stone bench or island on the vinyl. The warranty on our vinyl names stone kitchen benches placed directly on the flooring as stress it doesn't cover.
  • Seal the edges. Once the adhesive has cured, the edge along the cabinets can be finished with a flexible silicone sealant made for vinyl floors, so mop water stays out.
  • Run the floor into the fridge and dishwasher spaces, so both slide out over the same floor. A dishwasher on the new floor sits 3.5 to 5.5mm higher, so check its feet wind down to fit under the bench.
  • Moving the fridge? Lay a sheet of plywood and roll it across that.

Can you put vinyl over kitchen tiles?

Yes, if the tiles are flat and firmly stuck. Fill the grout lines with levelling compound first, or they show through the planks, and fix any tiles that sound hollow. The full method is in our guide to vinyl flooring over tiles, and every step of the glue is in our glue-down vinyl guide.

What damages vinyl in a kitchen?

Heat, castors, grit and standing water, and the warranty covers none of them. Each has an easy fix:

  • Hot pans and oven trays: put them on a board, never the floor. Burns and extreme local heat aren't covered.
  • Chairs and stools: felt pads under the legs. Castor wheels aren't covered.
  • Sink mats: buy ones labelled "non-staining". Stains from other mats and rugs aren't covered.
  • Leaks: fix a dripping dishwasher or fridge water line straight away. Floods, including faulty appliances and burst pipes, aren't covered.
  • Grit: a mat at the back door, and a daily sweep or vacuum without a beater bar.
  • Afternoon sun: blinds on a sunny kitchen window, as the manual advises, since strong sun can fade the floor.

Clean it weekly with warm water and a pH neutral floor cleaner. More in our guide to how to clean vinyl floors.

Vinyl kitchen flooring questions

Is vinyl flooring good for the kitchen?

Yes. Glue-down vinyl planks are 100% water resistant, rated P3 for slip and quieter underfoot than tiles. Keep stone benches off them, lay them around fixed cabinets and wipe up water rather than leaving it to sit.

What is the cheapest way to cover a kitchen floor?

Self-adhesive vinyl tiles, at about $17 to $33 a m² at hardware stores (31 October 2026). For a floor that is glued down over the whole area, our 2.5mm vinyl planks are $22 a m²: $343.20 of planks for a 12 m² kitchen.

What are the downsides of vinyl flooring in a kitchen?

It needs a flat, dry floor underneath, because bumps show through. Hot pans can burn it and castor wheels can mark it. A flood or a leaking appliance isn't covered by the warranty, and a glued floor takes more work to lift than a click floor.

What is the best vinyl flooring for a kitchen?

Glue-down vinyl planks with a 0.5mm wear layer and a P3 slip rating. Ours start at $22 a m² for 2.5mm planks; 4.5mm planks, $35 a m², feel more solid underfoot and come in longer 1524mm lengths.

Can vinyl flooring go under kitchen cabinets?

No. Lay it after the cabinets are in and cut it neatly around them, as the installation manual for our vinyl says. Never put a stone bench or island on top of it: the warranty doesn't cover that.

Can you put vinyl over kitchen tiles?

Yes, if the tiles are flat and firmly stuck. Fill the grout lines with levelling compound first, or they show through. The new floor sits 3.5 to 5.5mm higher.

Is vinyl kitchen flooring water resistant?

Yes. Our vinyl planks are 100% water resistant, so spills and a damp mop won't hurt them. Water from a flood, a burst pipe or a faulty appliance isn't covered by the warranty, so fix leaks fast.
