The question we field most on the phone is a simple one: what is laminate flooring, and is it actually any good? Laminate has been going into Australian homes for decades, and it is still the timber-look floor people understand least. It looks like timber, costs a fraction of the price, and clicks together with no glue or nails.
It is also the floor people get wrong most often, almost always by putting it in a room it was never built for. We sell laminate, hybrid, bamboo and engineered timber out of one warehouse, so we have no reason to talk any of them up. Our Urban Laminate 12mm is $25.91 per square metre, the cheapest board we stock.
Here is what the board is made of, what AC4 means, what it costs, and the rooms to walk away from.
The Short Answer [TL;DR]
Laminate flooring is a click-together board with a photographic timber print sealed under a hard resin surface, pressed onto a high density fibreboard core. Our Urban Laminate 12mm is $25.91 per square metre and comes in 12 colours. It runs a 0.5mm wear layer and an AC4 abrasion rating, the level a family home needs. The catch is underneath: the core is wood fibre, so laminate belongs in bedrooms, halls and living rooms, never a bathroom or a laundry.
The Straight Answer [Plain English]
What Is Laminate Flooring, Exactly?
Laminate flooring is a manufactured board that photographs timber rather than being timber. Four layers are bonded under heat and pressure. An image of a real board sits under clear resin, embossed so you can feel the grain. All four edges carry a click profile.
It is not vinyl and it is not timber. Hybrid and vinyl boards are stone or plastic based, and engineered timber carries a real veneer. Strand woven bamboo is compressed plant fibre at $61.39 per square metre. That is more than double laminate, so it is worth reading whether bamboo justifies that premium. Laminate is its own thing: a wood fibre core under a printed, resin sealed face.
Because it clicks rather than glues, laminate sits in the same family as our other floating floorboards. Boards lock to each other and rest loose over an underlay instead of being fixed down. All 50 products in that collection work that way, on a Click System or 5G Click join.
Under the Hood [Four Layers]
What Laminate Flooring Is Made Of
Four layers, and the third decides almost everything.
- Wear layer. Clear melamine resin loaded with aluminium oxide. It takes every scratch, and it is what the AC rating measures. Ours is 0.5mm.
- Decor layer. A high resolution photograph of a real board. Print quality and embossing decide whether it still reads as timber in hard afternoon light.
- Core. High density fibreboard, or HDF. Compressed wood fibre and resin, and by far the thickest part.
- Backing. A balancing sheet that holds the board flat as humidity swings.
HDF is wood fibre, and wood fibre absorbs moisture. When it absorbs enough it swells at the board edge and never shrinks back. Water sitting in a join for a few hours is a replaced board.
An SPC hybrid board is built the other way around. Its core is a stone and polymer composite with no wood fibre, so there is nothing to swell. That is why our SPC ranges are 100% water resistant and laminate never is. Our guide to what SPC flooring is has the full breakdown.
HDF still earns its place: warmer underfoot than a stone core, and denser sounding. It is also the cheapest honest way to run a timber look through a house.
The Rating [AC3 vs AC4 vs AC5]
What AC3, AC4 and AC5 Actually Mean
AC stands for abrasion class, the measure of how long the printed decor survives under a spinning abrasive wheel. It is the one number on a laminate box worth memorising, and it runs from AC1 to AC5.
| Class | Designed for | What that means at home |
|---|---|---|
| AC1 and AC2 | Light residential | Quiet bedrooms only. |
| AC3 | Heavy residential, light commercial | A quiet household or a one bedroom unit. |
| AC4 | Heavy residential, general commercial | A whole family home, hallways and entries included. |
| AC5 | Heavy commercial | Shops and offices. Overkill in a house. |
For a family home AC3 is the floor and AC4 is what you want. Urban Laminate 12mm is AC4, which is why we are comfortable putting it down a hallway and not just in a bedroom. Chasing AC5 in a house buys you little.
Read It Right [What AC Is Not]
AC measures surface abrasion and nothing else. It says nothing about a dropped saucepan or standing water in a join. Treat it as a scratch and wear scale, never a water rating.
Board Thickness [12mm]
Is 12mm Laminate Flooring Worth It?
Yes, but not for the reason most assume. Thickness describes the whole board and almost all of it is core. A 12mm laminate is a 12mm HDF core under a 0.5mm wear layer, not a 12mm wear surface.
Thickness buys rigidity, not lifespan, and that is what you notice walking in. A thicker core bridges small dips in the subfloor, so it reads flat underfoot instead of soft. A deeper click profile is also more forgiving to lock together.
Where 12mm costs you is height. A few extra millimetres plus underlay can foul a door that already sits low, so check your clearances first. The same trade runs through hybrid, which is why we wrote up whether board thickness matters.
Our rule is short: under 8mm a laminate floor starts to feel like one. Since our 12mm is the cheapest board on the list, there is no reason to shop thinner.
The Money [Per Square Metre]
What Laminate Flooring Costs in Australia
Urban Laminate 12mm is $25.91 per square metre. That is the entry point to our laminate flooring collection and the lowest per-metre price we sell. A box is $49.66 and covers 1.917 square metres, and it is sold by the full box.
Here is what that means for real rooms, including the standard 10% wastage allowance and rounded up to whole boxes.
| Space | Area | Order with 10% | Boxes | Board cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single bedroom | 12 m² | 13.2 m² | 7 | $347.62 |
| Lounge | 20 m² | 22 m² | 12 | $595.92 |
| Open plan living | 40 m² | 44 m² | 23 | $1,142.18 |
| Whole house | 120 m² | 132 m² | 69 | $3,426.54 |
The board price is one line of five.
- Underlay. Laminate has nothing attached to the back, so it is a separate purchase. Start with whether you need underlay, then browse flooring accessories.
- Scotia or new skirting to cover the perimeter expansion gap, plus trims at other floor coverings.
- Delivery from our Brisbane warehouse. We ship Australia-wide, and there is no showroom in the price.
- Labour, if you are not laying it yourself. Get two or three quotes covering the same prep and trims.
- Subfloor prep. Levelling compound on a bad slab is the line item that surprises people.
For your own rooms, run the numbers through our flooring calculator or send measurements through the instant quote form. Our measurement guide covers it room by room.
Room by Room [Where It Belongs]
Which Rooms Suit Laminate, and Which Do Not
Bedrooms, living and dining rooms, hallways, home offices and media rooms all suit laminate. They are dry rooms where the floor takes traffic and furniture rather than water.
Bathrooms, laundries and any entry taking wet feet off a pool are not laminate rooms. The surface sheds water fine, but water finds the join, wicks into the HDF and swells the edge permanently. Use SPC hybrid there instead: 6.5mm SPC hybrid at $34.82 per square metre, or 9.5mm SPC hybrid at $50.28, both 100% water resistant.
Watch Out [The Wet Room Mistake]
A laminate floor fails at the join, not on the surface
People test laminate by tipping water on a board and watching it bead. That proves nothing. Pour it into the seam instead, leave it four hours, and the edge swells for good.
Kitchens sit in the middle. Plenty of homes run laminate through an open plan kitchen, because a dishwasher leak is an event, not a daily condition. If that worries you, run SPC through the living zone instead.
Apartments are a separate conversation. Your body corporate may set a minimum acoustic requirement for hard flooring, and the underlay does most of that work. That is the whole subject of our guide to meeting body corporate noise rules in a unit. Check the by-laws and the product documentation, then see our acoustic flooring range.
The Fork [Laminate or Hybrid]
Laminate or Hybrid Flooring: How to Choose
Choose on water first, then on money. If any part of the area can hold standing water, buy hybrid. If not, laminate saves real money and gives up little.
| Urban Laminate 12mm | SPC Hybrid 6.5mm | SPC Hybrid 9.5mm | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price per m² | $25.91 | $34.82 | $50.28 |
| Core | 12mm HDF wood fibre | Stone and polymer | Stone and polymer |
| Wet areas | Not suitable | 100% water resistant | 100% water resistant |
| Surface | 0.5mm wear layer, AC4 rated | Wear layer listed per range | Wear layer listed per range |
| Underlay | Bought separately, always | Check the product page | Check the product page |
| 40 m² plus 10% | About $1,140 | About $1,532 | About $2,212 |
Put a number on it and the fork gets easy. Across a 40 square metre living and dining room, stepping up from laminate to 6.5mm SPC costs about $392. Across a 120 square metre house, about $1,176.
What laminate gives up is refinishing: once the decor wears through, the board is replaced, not sanded back. If that matters, our 14.3mm engineered Australian hardwood at $113.28 per square metre can be sanded and recoated, at more than four times the price.
Still weighing the field? Our comparison of laminate, vinyl and hybrid goes deeper. Then what hybrid flooring is covers the category from the other side, and engineered timber against laminate covers the step up.
Buying Rules [Best Laminate]
How to Pick the Best Laminate Flooring
Five checks, in order. Everything else is decoration.
- AC4 or walk away. If a retailer will not tell you the abrasion class, that is the answer.
- Get the wear layer in millimetres. It is a different spec to the AC rating. Ours is 0.5mm.
- Check the join, not just the price. Every board in our floating floor range uses a Click System or 5G Click, which is what makes a plank replaceable later.
- Judge colour in your own light. A decor from our 12 colour laminate range that reads warm under warehouse lighting can read orange in a west-facing room.
- Read the warranty before the marketing. Every laminate warranty carves out water damage. Our guide to flooring warranties shows where to look.
Buy the whole job in one order
Tone can shift between production batches. Measure, add 10%, buy it all at once.
Keep two spare boxes in the garage
A floating floor is repairable only if you have matching boards.
Buying on thickness alone
A 12mm AC3 board is worse in a hallway than an 8mm AC4 board.
Ordering exactly what you measured
Ten per cent is not padding. It covers wall cuts and the board that lands chipped.
The Lay [Click System]
Installing Laminate as a Floating Floor
Laminate lays like the rest of our floating floorboards, and nothing is permanent until the skirting goes back on. That makes it one of the friendlier DIY floors, near the top of the floors worth laying without a professional. Five points are specific to laminate.
- Acclimatise the boxes flat and unopened in the room, for the period stated in the installation instructions supplied with the product.
- Deal with slab moisture first. HDF tolerates it far less well than a stone core, so lay a moisture barrier. Our guide to preparing your subfloor covers levelling and testing.
- Leave the expansion gap at every wall, doorway and fixed object, then cover it with scotia. Pinning a floating floor is the number one cause of peaking.
- Keep heavy fixed items off the boards. Cabinetry and built-in wardrobes belong on the subfloor, with the floor run up to them.
- Clean it damp, never wet. Sweep, then a well wrung microfibre mop. No steam mops.
The mechanics are identical to hybrid, so our step by step installation walkthrough applies line for line. The DIY-friendly range is the beginner short list.
What Goes Wrong [Five Failures]
The Five Ways a Laminate Floor Fails
Nearly every laminate complaint we hear traces back to one of five things, and four are installation rather than product.
- Swollen board edges. Water sat in a join. The edge lifts and will not go back, which is why laminate stays out of bathrooms and laundries.
- Peaking and lifting. The floor expands, has nowhere to go and rises mid room, usually from a missing expansion gap or a heavy island pinning it down. Our piece on why a floating floor lifts covers the fixes.
- Gaps at the joins. Boards drift apart, normally because the click was never fully engaged on the first rows.
- A hollow, drummy sound. The subfloor was not flat, so the board bridges a dip and knocks. A prep failure, and it cannot be fixed from above.
- A worn out decor layer. The genuine end of life, fastest in entries where grit gets walked in. A doormat does more than any upgrade.
Four of those five are avoidable for free. If price is driving the project, our roundup of the best affordable flooring options has the bracket.
FAQ [Quick Answers]
Laminate Flooring: Common Questions
Q1 What is laminate flooring made of?
Four bonded layers: a clear melamine wear layer, a photographic print of timber, a high density fibreboard core, and a balancing backing sheet. Ours runs a 0.5mm wear layer over a 12mm HDF core.
Q2 How much does laminate flooring cost per square metre in Australia?
Our Urban Laminate 12mm is $25.91 per square metre. A box is $49.66 and covers 1.917 square metres. A 40 square metre living and dining room with 10% wastage comes to 23 boxes, or $1,142.18 in boards.
Q3 Is 12mm laminate flooring better than thinner boards?
It feels better and lays easier, but it does not last longer. Thickness is almost all core, so it buys rigidity and a deeper click profile. Surface life comes from the wear layer and the AC rating.
Q4 What does AC4 mean, and do I need AC5?
AC4 is the abrasion class rated for heavy residential and general commercial traffic, which covers a whole family home including hallways and entries. AC5 is a commercial grade, and AC3 is our minimum.
Q5 Is laminate flooring water resistant?
The surface sheds a spill you wipe up, but the core is wood fibre, so laminate is not rated for wet areas. Water sitting in a join swells the edge permanently. Use SPC hybrid in bathrooms and laundries, which is 100% water resistant.
Q6 Laminate or hybrid flooring: which should I buy?
Decide on water first. If any part of the area can hold standing water, buy hybrid. If it cannot, laminate is better value. Across a 40 square metre room, stepping up to 6.5mm SPC hybrid costs about $392.
Q7 Can you lay laminate flooring yourself?
Yes, it is one of the more forgiving DIY floors. Floating floorboards click together and rest over an underlay with no glue or nails. Flattening the subfloor and leaving expansion gaps decide the result.
Q8 Can laminate flooring be sanded and refinished?
No. The timber look is printed, not a veneer, so a worn board is replaced rather than refinished. If you want a floor that can be sanded back, our 14.3mm engineered Australian hardwood is $113.28 per square metre.
