There is a moment in every vinyl plank flooring purchase where the confidence runs out. Five tabs open. One store leads with thickness, another with warranty years, a third with a price that seems too good. None of them tells you which number actually matters.
I sell these floors every day from our Brisbane warehouse, and I would rather you buy well than buy twice. Here is the guide I wish every customer read first: the spec that matters, the ones that are marketing, real prices from our shelf, and the red flags in cheap boards.
The Short Answer [TL;DR]
For most Australian homes, the best vinyl plank flooring is a glue-down board, 4.5mm or thicker, with a 0.5mm commercial-grade wear layer, from a supplier who puts that number in writing. The wear layer decides how long the floor lasts — not the thickness, and not the brand story. Expect about $25 to $47 per square metre for quality planks at the time of writing.
First Things First [The 30-Second Version]
What Is Vinyl Plank Flooring?
Vinyl plank flooring is a printed vinyl board that looks like timber and glues straight down to your subfloor. Each plank is a sandwich: a tough clear coat, a printed timber image, a flexible vinyl core and a backing. It is quiet, soft underfoot, 100% water resistant and one of the cheapest ways to get a convincing timber look. My what is vinyl flooring explainer covers the rest of the jargon.
One naming note. Most of what Australians call "lino" is actually vinyl — I untangle that in lino flooring versus vinyl. You will also see the same product sold as luxury vinyl plank, luxury vinyl flooring or LVP flooring. Different suits, same board. Planks like the ones in our vinyl flooring range are what this guide is about.
The Spec That Matters [Wear Layer]
The Wear Layer: The First Number I Check on Any Quote
The wear layer is the clear protective coat on top of the plank, measured in millimetres. It is the best predictor of how long a vinyl floor keeps looking good. Feet, claws, chair legs, grit — this one layer fights off all of it. Once it wears through, the printed image below has no protection, and nothing in a bottle brings it back.
Cheap boards run 0.1mm to 0.3mm. Fine in a guest bedroom. Not fine in a hallway with two kids and a dog. The commercial standard — the spec shops and offices ask for — is 0.5mm, and it is my recommendation for any busy family home. Slip ratings and heavy-traffic specs live in my commercial vinyl flooring guide. The takeaway is short: find the wear layer before you look at anything else.
Our own bias, declared openly: even our entry-level 2.5mm board carries the same 0.5mm commercial wear layer as our hero range. That is rare at the budget end, and deliberate. A thin plank with a serious wear layer outlasts a thick plank with a token one, every time.
Under the Surface [Plank Anatomy]
What Is Inside a Vinyl Plank?
Every plank stacks the same four layers: the wear layer, a print film carrying the timber image, a flexible vinyl core, and a backing that grips the adhesive. Lifespan, looks, feel, grip — in that order. Tap through the layers below.

Wear layer
The clear coat that takes the punishment: feet, claws, chair legs, grit. 0.5mm is commercial grade — the number to insist on. When it wears through, the floor is done. This is where your money should go.
One cousin worth knowing: hybrid flooring swaps the flexible core for a rigid stone-composite one, which lets it click together and float. My SPC versus LVP explainer is the deep dive.
The Ladder [2.5mm to 5mm]
Plank Thickness: What Thicker Actually Buys You
Thickness is the number stores lead with, because bigger sounds better. The honest version: on a glue-down floor every plank is fully stuck, so the slab does the structural work. Extra millimetres buy feel and forgiveness — a 4.5mm or 5mm board feels more solid, carries deeper timber texture, and copes better with small bumps in the slab. They do not buy wear life. A 2.5mm plank with a 0.5mm wear layer will outlast a 5mm plank with a 0.3mm one.
My rule of thumb: 2.5mm to 3mm on a flat slab, in rentals, or when the budget is the boss. 4.5mm is the sweet spot for family homes — where our hero range sits. 5mm is for the most substantial feel. Every option needs a properly prepared subfloor; thickness reduces the fuss, never removes it.
Three Ways Down [Formats]
Glue-Down vs Click vs Loose Lay: An Honest Fork
Vinyl planks reach your floor three ways. Glue-down planks are bonded permanently — thin, quiet, rock solid, and the format every plank on our shelf uses. Click planks float over an underlay; in Australia that market has largely moved to hybrid flooring, the click product we stock instead. Loose lay planks just sit there, relying on friction and perfect conditions — we do not sell them. Peel-and-stick is a short-term fix at best.
Glue-down should not scare a DIYer. A patient first-timer can lay it — my guide on how to lay vinyl plank flooring walks the whole job, prep to final roll. In many renovations you can skip demolition too: I cover the flatness test and the grout-line step in can you lay vinyl flooring over tiles.
Still weighing planks against a roll? My honest comparison — from a store that only sells planks, and says so — is in sheet vinyl vs vinyl planks.
The Fun Part [Looks]
Colour, Plank Size and Pattern
Specs sorted, the looks decide how the floor lives with you. Light and mid warm oak tones lead Australian homes in 2026: they hide dust, open small rooms up and do not date. For the full method — light, aspect, undertones, the sample rule — read how to choose the right vinyl flooring colour.
Plank size changes a room more than people expect. Longer boards mean fewer joins and a calmer, more expensive-looking floor — why our Allure range runs extra-long 1423mm planks. Browse the lot in our timber-look vinyl flooring collection.
Then there is pattern. Herringbone — short planks in a zig-zag parquet — is the designer look of the decade, and vinyl has made it affordable. My herringbone vinyl flooring guide covers the 914 x 152mm planks, the 15% wastage rule, and why the look costs about $43.84 per square metre instead of $100-plus engineered parquetry.
Where It Works [Room by Room]
Which Rooms Suit Vinyl Planks? Almost All of Them
This is vinyl's quiet superpower: one floor, the whole home. The planks are 100% water resistant — vinyl does not absorb water, so boards do not swell, cup or warp. Kitchens, laundries and bathrooms are on the table, with your wet-area building requirements staying exactly as they are underneath. If a bathroom or laundry is the main event, my guide to the best vinyl for wet areas ranks the options.
Living areas and bedrooms are easy: vinyl is quieter and warmer underfoot than tile.
What about pets and cleaning?
Claws, water bowls and the odd accident are the classic vinyl test, and it passes better than nearly any hard floor — the full story is in is vinyl flooring pet friendly. Day to day: a five-minute sweep and a damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. No sealing, no polishing, no steam mops. The routine and the never-use list live in how to clean vinyl floors.

Apples With Apples [Comparing Quotes]
How to Compare Vinyl Flooring Quotes Like-for-Like
Most "cheaper" quotes are not cheaper. They are different. Compare fairly by holding four things equal: wear layer in millimetres, plank thickness, whether adhesive and trims are included, and the delivered price. Change one and the comparison means nothing. The classic move is quoting a 0.3mm wear layer against a 0.5mm one — same pretty photo, a lot less floor life.
Two tools make it easy. Our Price Beat Guarantee puts the rule in writing: bring a genuine like-for-like quote on the same spec and we beat it by $1 per square metre. Buyer Beware [Red Flags]
Red Flags in Cheap Vinyl Plank Flooring
Cheap vinyl is not a bargain. It is a lottery, and the house usually wins. When a listing undercuts everything on the page, the savings came out of the board. What I check before a plank gets near my own house:
- No wear layer figure anywhere. If the number that decides lifespan is missing, assume it is bad.
- No named brand or range. No spec sheet to hold anyone to, no batch to match later.
- A strong chemical smell. Quality vinyl is certified low-emission — ours is Korean-made, low-emission stock. A sample should smell like almost nothing.
- A warranty with no document. A number in a heading means little without terms you can read.
The One Rule [Non-Negotiable]
If the wear layer is not in writing, walk away
Every quality supplier states the wear layer in millimetres, on the page or the quote. A seller who will not put it in writing is telling you something. Believe them.
In fairness, vinyl is not for everyone. It can dent under heavy point loads, harsh direct sun can fade it, and it will not add resale value like real timber. It is all in the disadvantages of vinyl plank flooring — read it before you buy, not after.

FAQ [Quick Answers]
Vinyl Plank Flooring: Your Questions, Answered
What is the best vinyl plank flooring in Australia?
No single best board — only the best spec for your rooms. For most family homes that means a glue-down plank, 4.5mm or thicker, with a 0.5mm commercial wear layer, stated in writing. On our shelf that spec is the Timberland 4.5mm at about $39.13 per square metre at the time of writing — our hero range.
What thickness of vinyl plank is best?
For most homes, 4.5mm is the sweet spot — solid underfoot with deeper textures. On a flat slab or tight budget, 2.5mm to 3mm performs well, because glue-down planks get their strength from the slab. Thickness is feel; the wear layer decides how long the floor lasts.
What wear layer do I need?
For a busy family home, pets or a hallway, 0.5mm — the commercial-grade spec. Guest bedrooms can get away with 0.3mm. Below that I would not go. Always get the wear layer in millimetres, in writing, before you compare prices.
Is glue-down vinyl better than click vinyl?
Different products for different jobs. Glue-down planks are thin, quiet and permanently bonded, so they feel solid and keep door clearances easy. Click boards float over an underlay — in Australia that market is now mostly hybrid flooring with a rigid stone core. All our vinyl planks are glue-down; our click product is hybrid.
Can I use vinyl planks in a bathroom or laundry?
Yes. Vinyl planks are 100% water resistant — the material does not absorb water, so boards will not swell or warp from splashes, steam or mopping. Your wet-area building requirements stay as they are underneath. Glue-down planks suit these rooms well because there are no floating edges.
How much does vinyl plank flooring cost in Australia?
Quality planks run from about $24.98 to about $46.96 per square metre on our shelf at the time of writing. Adhesive, trims and installation are extra, so compare the delivered, like-for-like total.
Buy It Once, Buy It Right
The whole guide in three moves: find the wear layer and get it in writing; match thickness to your slab and budget, not a bigger-is-better pitch; then let real samples on your real floor make the final call. Do that and it is hard to buy badly.
We keep our end simple: online-only and warehouse-direct from Brisbane — no showroom rent in the price — with Australia-wide delivery and free click and collect locally. Stuck between two boards? Call 0431 311 633 for the honest answer, even when it is the cheaper board.
